Blue Moon
« on: April 05, 2012, 06:42:03 am »
Looking for chords and tab for Blue Moon...in particular the lead piece that starts when they come back from the bridge about 1:00 in.    The tab I have found on line so far looks wrong and unplayable (for me anyway).    The only video I have found is at the link included here.....Blue Moon starts at 3:38 with the lead at 4:20.

Any help appreciated.
thanks
chuck

Chuck....please consider attending the Oct. FanFest.  I'm sure Jeff Green of the Pickniks can personally show you how to play it.  He does Bob Bogle like nobod e's bizness. ;)

Chuck,

Yes, I find that to be the difficult part of Blue Moon.  I think though that it just follows the rhythm chord pattern;  if you play the rhythm chords (C, Am, F, G), you should be able to pick out the notes for that section.  It is slightly more difficult when the tune modulates. as you won't then have the benefit of the open chords.

The frustrating part about the Ventures' original release of Blue Moon (my favorite version) is that it is played in an unusual key, not quite "C," so it is impossible to play along with it.  I have an MP3 player that can adjust the pitch, but it still can't adjust the pitch enough to correct it. The key of the release is almost a full half-note down.

Thanks for that link, which I hadn't seen before. I think that supports the view that Bob Bogle, not Nokie, must have played the original version of Blue Moon.  And he plays it in C!  (The Ventures must have tuned using an off-key piano for that session; no electronic tuners in those days.)

Good luck,

Andy

Thanks for all the help.   I'm finally getting back to working on this.
First....using a Audacity I was able to read in the album version of Blue Moon and shift it up a half step so it is in tune with the guitar.....I can also slow it down without changing pitch.

The recorded lead that Bob plays is different than the one he plays in the youtube video posted above.   I find the album version harder to play and like the live version better.
The tab for the recorded verse is something like:

Code: [Select]
E)------------------1--1----0--------1-1---0-------------------33333---|
B)------------------1--1----1--------1-1---1-------------------33333---|
G)-0----0-0-----0-2-0--0----0--------0-0---0----------------2--44444---|
D)--3-2-------3----------3--2--0-2-3-----0-2-----0-2-----------55555---|
A)----------~----------------------------------3----3-3-0-3------------|
E)---------------------------------------------------------------------|

WHereas tab for what he's playing on youtube is something like:

Code: [Select]
E)-------------------------------------------------------------33333---|
B)-------------------------------------------------------------33333---|
G)-0----0-0-----0-2-0--0----0--------0-0---0----------------2--44444---|
D)--3-2-------3-----2--2-3--2--0-2-3-2-2-0-2-----0-2-----------55555---|
A)----------~----------------------------------3----3-3-0-3------------|
E)---------------------------------------------------------------------|

I/m not great at tab so please see it only as a guide and correct me where I'm wrong.

Also from the youtube version ,   watching Don play the chords for the lead in he is playing C - Am - Dm - G...........which is interesting because the lead plays F where he  plays Dm.

I'm working on tabbing out the solo and will post it when I complete it.   The solo uses a lot of open strings.    On the recording for the 2nd time through when they move up one step, he must have put a capo  on the 2nd fret....only way he could have played the solo.   Makes me wonder if they used capos a lot.    I wonder if they used it to play the lead on Perfidia for the 2nd time through.

well...that's my update for today
Chuck

Chuck- Fan fest host Tom B. here.

If interested & assuming you'd come early & stay over Friday
eve. at THE DAY'S INN, I have a MEET & GREET scheduled from
6:30-9:00 PM which will involve some tutoring sessions from a few
of our accomplished jam players inc. Jeff Green from our headlining band-
THE PICKNIKS.   Walt has also agreed in advance to participate & he does a
fine job incorporating 'Nokie's Flair' into his playing.

I'm still trying to line up one more jammer to lend a hand with this aspect of the pre-gathering festivities!

It also uses open strings when it modulates to D.

I've finally got the solo down and have tabbed the song all out.
With all the open notes in the solo the must have played with a capo on the record for the 2nd time through
I enjoyed doing this...hope it helps some others

Solo Playing tips:
Most of the solo is open strings on every other note..just keep your fingers going on and off the keyboard

The solo has an underlying melody (bold notes in the tab)..this is basically played along with adjoining strings.  Follow the melody and the rest will come.

This tab is in C…the record is ˝ step off  but it is played in C as can be seen on the youtube video.

Also the ending is different on the album and single versions although my copy of the album that I bought when it first came out has what's usually referred to as the single version on it.  ???
