Jeff...I won't pay that kinda $ for bass strings...maybe only change them 1 time/year??

We could do like Donald "Duck" Dunn of Booker T and The MGs; he stated this in an interview:
"I never change the strings on my bass, in fact, I've only changed one string in 15 years, and that's because it broke."

Ha! That would save a lot of $$$!

P.S. Once upon a time I had old, old strings on a Fender bass, and the guitar wouldn't play in tune beyond the 5th fret!

I claim the record on behalf of a dear pal of mine, who was the bass player in my first band.

The flatwound strings on his old bass have not been changed since about 1967...!!

Walt, on account of the old strings on my Fender Precision, comparing that washtub bass is approximately how my bass sounded.
My bass was a 1964, I bought it as the first owner, from Bleckert's Music in Willoughby, Ohio in 1968.
It still had the same strings on it in 1975, so the strings on it were 11 years old!
I traded that Fender away to Willo Music in Willoughby, Ohio in 1975 in order to get a new Mosrite Bass.  I was low on cash...
Sad to say, both instruments are gone away now...getting rid of the Fender was my worst ever guitar trading mistake.
It's the one that got away...

Yes Walt, and I forgot to mention, that not only was it a pre CBS bass, it was in a custom color, Shoreline Gold!
