I remember Mels kit back in the 80s, It was a champaige sparkle kit ( Slingerland) but with lud wig tom mounts. Double Bass Drum, with two toms mtd. on each Bass Drum and Ithink two floor toms. the hi hat stand was Slingerland and a Pearl Bass drum pedle. I know because I HAD THE SAME  equipment  just a coincidense I guess. Mel all way favored his Rodgers Dyno- Sonic,Where I favor my 1974 Slingerland Super Sound King Chrome over brass snare drum. as far as cymbols I SAY MEL USED Zildjians as do I . HE PLAYED THE STANDARD GRIP, WHER HIS SON lEON PLAYS THE MATCH GRIP, WHICH I PREFER ALSO .Their is a video on you tube wher Buddy Rich tells why he does not like the match grip ck. it out you will get a kick out of it.Chat with you later.Tom Connolly
