The host, Mr. Tom Baltaeff, somehow managed to pull another sooperb event out of his hat this year.
Kudos to you, sir.  I'd encourage EVERYONE who attended post some comments, as well as links to any pix and vids here.

As a guy who normally doesn't eat much, I can tell you the food was in ample supply and gooooood eatin'.  The chicken marsala was outstandin'. ;D

I thank you sir.   Over the span of the last two hours,
I received many 'this was your best ever' remarks so
there's a good possibility that this is 'the one' that will
serve as 'the benchmark' to try to top as we proceed
forward.

I've been quite busy the last couple days acting as chauffer-
not necessarily a good one to Jeff & Julie Green & Howard &
Lucia Rubin who opted to take advantage of my 'daily time off'
doing absolutely nothing to drag me to LONGWOOD GARDENS
yesterday & PA. DUTCH COUNTRY today.

Tho never considered 'normal,' I think I'll be 'back to it' come
tomorrow!

Thanks to all the jammers who made this year's event.... see above!

From a preliminary glance at the video of ffest 2014, EVERY 1 of the jammers is to be praised and congratulated for their performance...NO EXCEPTIONS!

Performing in FRONT of an audience is scary at best and can be intimidating.
This is especially true when performing in front of an audience of your peers.

Anyone who views the videos from prior years and compares them to 2014 WILL SEE that the improvement is obvious and it applies to ALL performers.  I say to all attendees (all means NO exceptions), commit to attending ffest 2015 NOW and let's start spreading the word NOW so we can fill that KofC hall in 2015.

Unfortunately, we didn't print anything this year.   What we
printed in past years didn't really constitute a program.

Schedule of Events, band pairings w/ personnel & bios/photos
of the featured bands made up 'bout three pages- one year it
was two pages double-sided & laminated!

This was our first visit to the East Coast and the 6th annual Ventures Fan Fest in Crum Lynne, PA.
.  We had a tremendous time thanks to super human efforts by Tom and Walt.
We were warningly welcomed by everyone, but knowing of my sight disability,Tom also showed/drove my wife, Lúcia and I around after the event with Jeff (Picnics) & Julie Green!  We saw many sights that tourists would never find.
Highlights!
Performances were excellent by all!  I think that everyone that brought their instrument got a chance to play and everyone else jumped in to assist.  We finally got to meet the Picknics, who we had only seen/heard on DVD.  Live and in person was heard and FELT!  The DVDs and YouTube recordings do not even come close to the experience.  The Bongo Straits were a super surprise! Another up and coming class group and act! Their take on so many popular instrumental hits brought many of us to our feet with applause!  The ending Beach Boys segment was really a surprise.  I have the Beach Boys instrumental LP, Stack of Tracks and thought we would hear something similar, but was very wrong.  Looks like there is serious consideration to create something from this!  Stay Tuned!

I agree w/everything you said.  I think this was the best of the fests.
There's NO reason that hall shouldn't be filled with V and other instro fans.  There's no other event I'm aware of where that much fun/entertainment can be had for only 50 bux.

Great job, Tom ;D

First, I want to thank everyone who participated in The Ventures Play The Beach Boys set. They are, in alphabetical order, Tom Baltaeff, Steve Chestnut, John Drysdale, Grant Green, Jeff Green, Carl Hubler, Bob Kenney, Forrest Kulwin, John Magee, John Ramski, and Byron Tietjen. Did I miss anyone? You all provided me with wonderful memories for which I am profoundly grateful.

Of course, none of this would ever happen if not for Tom Baltaeff. Special thanks, Tom!

I'm already looking forward to next year.

The thought was lingering in the back of my mind that without Bob Spalding this year, the Fan Jam was not going to be as special as it had been in previous years.  Well, dismiss that thought!  Fan Fest 2014 turned out pretty good.  Maybe one of the best.

The always impressive Pickniks once again brought us a tight, well-rehearsed set of Ventures tunes.  I never get tired of listening to how they treat The Ventures music with their own distinctive style.  The volume is balanced so that you can hear every instrument.  The tempo for each tune is spot on.  The musicians complement each other well. And they have fun, which translates into the audience having fun.  Great job, guys.

A huge treat was the next generation of Walt Stagner's band, Bongo Straits.  Very entertaining.  I thought that "Guys With Guitars" was very good.  Bongo Straits takes it up a few notches ... make that several notches.  The current line-up seems to have hit the sweet spot.  High energy, good tune selection.  The guys are really tuned in to each other and they deliver the goods.  Kudos, gentlemen.

I'm always happy to see and to hear our regular jammers.  This is the time when you never really know how things are going to sound because it is most often the first time you are meeting with your fellow musicians to play your particular tunes.  As in the past, once getting over any initial jitters, everyone brought their talent and abilities to the fore.  We enjoyed quite a mix of Ventures tunes from the early albums right on up to the Wild Again albums, including some of the Japanese classics.  In a way, this is my favorite part of the fan jams.  Everyone gets to participate and there's always a lot of good will and camaraderie.  A huge thanks to everyone.

Last year, Noel Squiltieri had an idea.  "Let's do a Beach Boys set in the Ventures style", he said. This year, that idea came to fruition.  The Ventures didn't cover many Beach Boys tunes, so this required a little imagination.  Well, the jammers didn't disappoint. Every tune had its moments.  I think the audience had fun with the overall idea (or should I say, fun fun fun). I enjoyed my role in the project and I hope everyone enjoyed the final result.  I've seen and heard some of the unedited video coverage of the set.  My early favorite: California Girls.

As Ventures fans, we often lament the fact that The Ventures are going to soon retire and not tour anymore.  Well, I think that The Ventures have planted enough seeds along the way in their long career that we now have enough talented musicians everywhere to pick up where they leave off. Thanks to all of you who brought your talents, good will  and friendship to the jam. What a great way to spend a Saturday afternoon.

Thanks for the kind words, Steve.  I thought you did a stellar job on drums as well as your playin' on the Bboys set.  Kudos are in order for you as well.  I hope you'll be workin' w/Noel on the Bboys project.

It's great to have you posting here.

Thanx Steve for your review.   Seems we can
'always' count on you in that regard.   Still we
need to see more feedback.

Will say that I was teased recently by Bob Dowd
that gettin' on FANS OF with his '014 fest views'
was at the top of his TO DO list.   Let's certainly
hope so!

The 2014 Edition of The Ventures Fan Fest was another winner in a series of solid successes! Lots of musical participation! Lots of "new" tunes! Lots of familiar faces! (And some new faces also!)

Would you believe that included this year were the obscurities "Cookie and Cokes" and "The Twomp"?  Well...they really were!
Byron Tietjen was in on the "Cookies and Coke" caper. He performed on stage with his new Sunburst Wilson Bros. guitar, serial #6. Beautiful! And now, in addition to his fine playing, Byron has added vocals to his skills set!

By invitation, I was asked to "sing" "The Twomp" in a duet with my brother Grant.  I really believe this performance was better than OK,
please consider that none of the group of us had rehearsed it together and that includes Grant and myself!
That is one Ventures tune I never, ever expected to perform, I'm very happy that I was included!
Lead guitar was ably handled by Ken Arnold, on drums was a "newbie", Forrest Kulwin (terrific player), Joe Klink was on rhythm guitar and Walt Stagner was on bass.

Speaking of Walt Stagner... it was super to have him return to the Event and he didn't come alone, he brought with him his newest group, Bongo Straits. The line-up includes new members Forrest Kulwin on drums & Roger Underwood on guitar-a fine player. And gee, he had a nice guitar, a Gold '65 Classic Jazzmaster, looks exactly like mine! The Gold Dust Twins!
Walt is back on guitar, playing superbly- reliable Joe Klink is still with the group on rhythm guitar, while another newbee- Bob Adalpe admirable
handles all bass duties. This band sounds great! In addition to his guitar/bass picking, Walt took on the added responsibility of recording the event.
In the samples that are now available on YouTube, from what I've seen/heard, these are the best recordings from the 6 series of Tom Baltaeff's Ventures Fan Fests.

Vic Hines did a fine presentation on electric acoustic guitar.  Among the tunes he played was "Stranger In Midosuji"
Our Ventures Fan Fest Coordinator, Tom Baltaeff played drums on this selection and he turned in a solid job.

Old Friend John Magee from Indy was on hand and he played bass on several tunes.  It's great to see Big John there playing away in his usual fine fashion.

Bob Dowd and his wife Charlotte were welcomed back this year after missing the 2013 Event. Bob was backed up by 3 of us 4 Pickniks, he had John Ramski - drums, Grant Green - bass and me on rhythm guitar. What fun! We played a dozen tunes that ranged through the Ventures early albums. Bob started with "Morgen", "Home", "Ups And Downs", "The Shuck", "Wheels", "Ginchy", "Red Top", "White Silver Sands", a few others and finished with "My Bonnie Lies".
These are some of my personal favorites! Colonel Bob played them very well too!

Kanad Ghose and his son Saugata were back again this year and presented another ably performed, enjoyable set.  I was invited to accompany them also.  Thanks! I was scheduled to play on 54 tunes -- a lot of work, enjoyable work in learning many tunes in preparation.  I think I actually played on 50 or 51 of those scheduled. I was happy to still be standing at the end of the Event! The excitement kept me going!  It was fun, it's nice to be wanted(musically that is and not by the sheriff!)

Carl Hubler was in attendance and he played rhythm guitar on several numbers.  Nice to see him there!

I now present these special mentions:
Steve Chestnut, the all around utility man.  He was everywhere! There he was playing rhythm guitar, then lead guitar, then bass guitar, then drums and get this, a triangle! He did all these jobs wonderfully well.  We wonder when he found time to take those triangle lessons?

Another special mention goes to Gary Wertz.  He came back again this year with some more of his superb guitar collection.  Included was his new Sunburst Wilson Bros. guitar with Gold Trim! - Serial #2. Beautiful!I'm sorry I missed his offer for me to play it , but unfortunately for me, at that time I was no longer scheduled. Gary kindly transported Julie and I around town on Friday night before the Event, so we got in some good conversation time with Gary.

All the way from Brazil came Howard (The Computer Doctor) and his lovely wife Lucia.  A wonderful couple that Julie and I had the pleasure to spend some time with after the event ended. We very much enjoyed their company and we hope to stay in touch.

Our Official Announcer Dave Zelinsky provided 'the fest' with another outstanding performance of his commentary.
Dave also had the added distinction of being the only performer of this year's Event to play "Walk: Don't Run!". Way to go Dave!

We, The Pickniks were privileged to open the show this year and we enjoyed every minute of the entire day.
John, Grant, Bob and myself were kept very busy by appearing in different lineups. It was a joy to sit in with our Ventures Friends!

A very special addition was the presentation of a Ventures instrumentally styled Beach Boys set. This developed from an idea that was put forward by Noel Squitieri at the end of Ventures Fan Fest 2013. The set was well done by Noel and all the fellows. A surprise was the accompaniment on organ by John Drysdale- he did a splendid job joining the set with his keyboard work and also appeared at other times during the 'all day event' on guitar. This special presentation went so well that interest is being expressed to possibly record these arrangements at a date sometime in the future.

OK, that's a wrap...I apologize to anybody that I failed to mention.

Thanks Tom, Bernie, Jim, Dave, Dennis, Rodger and everybody for putting together this outstanding Event!

Looking forward to seeing everybody again in 2015!

Jeff Green - on behalf of The Pickniks
