The 2012 East Coast Ventures Fanfest Reviews
« on: October 15, 2012, 04:52:51 pm »
Hello to everyone on this forum.

The 2012 East Coast Ventures Fanfest was held over this past weekend much to the delight of everyone in attendance.
Unfortunately there were some people who usually attend but due to personal reasons or family obligations had to cancel.
The event was a rousing success again this year, in fact after last year's fest it seemed as though it hit the top of the chart and it would be difficult to get much better, however, it did!!

I would like to thank Bob Spaulding & Artie for coming again, their appearance just makes everything worthwhile.
To the host, Tom Baltaeff, another phenomenal job of organizing the event.  For anyone who doesn't know, there's not a day that goes by all year when some kind of thought or idea is discussed or gone over concerning what can be done to help improve or better the day for all.

It was a pleasure to meet the new attendees such as Bob Dowd and Charlotte, John Drysdale and his wife, & Kristi Lynn Kuhn just to mention a few.  The tributes to Bud Hubler & Mike Kuhn were certainly emotional and well received by all.
Congratulations to all of the jammers as their playing stepped up to a very high level due to dedication, much practice, and personal pride.

I can't wait to see the DVD's that will be put together, anyone who could not make it should make sure that they arrange to get copies when they are available.

There certainly is a closeness & meaningful friendship that has developed since the 1st Fan Fest took place.  All I heard people saying to each other at the end of the evening was what a wonderful time they had and couldn't wait until next year.  That's exactly how I feel.

I'm glad I have this forum to express my sentiments.
Looking forward to seeing everyone at the 2013 Fanfest.

Regards, Bernie

Bob Spalding played with as many bands as time would permit and he seemed to fit like a glove in all of them.

Something spontaneous happened this year.....interplay of featured bands!
For example, Picnicks drummer John Ramski joined GWG in a dual drummer/Bob Spalding version of Lullabye of the Leefs.

WOW!!

Bernie, good buddy it certainly took awhile for us to see
your first post & what a 'perfect time' for it.

You're so 'right on' when you say..."not a day goes by during
the year where an idea isn't discussed in the hopes of bettering
the event."   As host, it's nice to be 'in the spotlight' yearly & have
praise heaped upon oneself but let's be honest & I've tried to get this
message out to the (well I wouldn't call it a throng) audience each year-
it's caring fans & friends like YOU, WALT, GILBERT, DENNIS, RODGER, FRANK
& JIM who not only lend support each & every year but keep 'the host' on the straight
& narrow should he suddenly deviate from 'rational thinking.'

It's a joy working along with each & every one of you.   The friendship & dedication
continues to grow by leaps & bounds.   Can we top 2012's edition- DAMN RIGHT WE CAN!

The variety of toons played by ALL of the bands was quite something.  We were all treated to live versions of toons that we've never heard live before such as Blue Tango, Joker's Wild, Harlem Nocturn, Music To Watch Girls By....just to name a few.  Additionally, The Shadows were well-represented here.  The Picnicks even wrote/performed a new song called "Cherio" in the Shadows style.

Well, Tom you know everyone had a good time there.  Let me be the first one to
crack the ice...

I was there and can honestly said I have enjoyed every minute of this wonderful event.  This was my 2nd time attending The Philly Ventures Fan Jam and would say that I have enjoyed even more than last year.  I was so inspired. As soon as I got home I start to think of playing a few more new song next year.

 :)

Thanks Vincent & so very thoughtful of you to share alot
of the videos you shot at the event.   Your playing was
exemplary as usual & I enjoyed sittin' in on HARLEM
NOCTURNE.   It didn't appear to 'throw you off' at
all.

I wrote a review last week.

I know Grant, from the Picnicks, is not connected to the internet, does not have a cell phone or a computer. Maybe, having everyone's email address Tom, perhaps send an email to all attendees.

I was amazed at the quality of the playing this year.  There were so many tunes played that it's impossible for me to comment on each.  A few that stood out for me were The Fugitive, which was played expertly and is very difficult; Driving Guitars sounded better than the original, Kanad showed us that Caravan is not impossible to play (great job by Tom Connolly on drums); Blue Star and Harlem Nocturne are two of my favorites and were played flawlessly; and the Picknicks and Guys With Guitars were unbelievable.  Unfortunately I had to leave before the Adventures played.  I'm sure I missed a fantastic show.
I am looking at the set list from that day and have to say that every moment of music was enjoyable and every player delivered their songs with feeling and expertise.
Thanks to Tom and Dave and everyone who organized this event.
Thanks to Bob Spalding for attending from Texas with his wife and playing guitar with each group.
Everyone was very friendly and accessible.
I look forward to next year.
Ken Arnold

I agree w/your comments, Ken, 100%.
I'm sorry you had to leave early and I also wish we all had more time to interact w/each other.
You mist a great show by the Ad-Ventures, but it was all captured on video.
Some preliminary video links are posted somewhere nearby on this board.

I think I already posted that everyone's playing was kicked up a few notches from last year.  Maybe we're all aging well...like fine wine.

Feel free to post often, Ken.  It's a pleasure to read what you write.

Tom here is my report from last week, also included your email listings.
Rich Miller

I like the idea of "The Most Iimproved Player/Players " Award, and also possibly the "Best Song of the Day" award, which I would pick the jam of "Hawaii 5-0".

My wife enjoyed the day, especially since there was music being played, by "LIVE" musicians the entire day, even while food was being prepared.

I would also suggest contacting a Philly, or New Jersey, or New York sales rep for "Vintage Guitar" magazine and invite them to come next year. They usually take some pictures and publish them with a storyline in a later issue. They set up a table and will sell the magazine and take subscriptions. A great read every month for me.

What about possibly having Bob Spalding contact his friends at the "Rock and Roll" Hall of Fame, and suggest they hold the event in Cleveland sometime in the future? Just a thought.

Had a great time and made many new friends.

Now I remember seeing much of what you posted Rich.

In regards to VINTAGE GUITAR, it's my understanding that Bob Spalding got 'a nod' from
Vintage in regards to posting 'our group shot' from the fest where everyone's pictured
holding up their guitars & drum sticks.   Be advised however, that both last year &
this year 'well in advance' of the event, both Michael Waters & Bob Shade from
HALLMARK GUITARS contacted Vintage,  asking for an 'event plug' & were
told that we'd have to make it part of an advertisement.   Then they'd
consider it.

As for the Cleveland location, I already told Walt I'm game for a 'second fest' there- not
sure that's viable 'cause we'd lose alot of the East coasters not to mention ALL the unpaid
help.

You don't know 4 certain WHO you'd lose from the East Coast.
Besides, you might GAIN some newbies from Canookyland and other nearby places.
Not to mention some other "secret stuff" that might be in the werx for the non-PA event that might entice more attendees.
