The consensus seems to be Billy Strange, Gandy Dancer.  The "real" Ventures version, which was recorded ahead but unreleased, (and which was posted by Walt) is quite different.  Very "Ventures-like" but to my ears not as melodious or musical. The studio logs support the conclusion.

I may have to change my user name here.  :) Seriously, it's a drag finding out that tunes I thought were played by Bob, Don and Nokie are actually Billy Strange, Tommy Allsup, Glen Campbell, Tommy Tedesco or God knows who else. Whether they could actually play them better themselves is sort of irrelevant. I still love the records but I feel cheated.  :'(
