The Ventures and the Shadows, perhaps a difference?
« on: March 28, 2012, 08:40:48 am »
Andy (Abstamaria) has swerved into an intresting topic and started a thread over here http://shadowmusic.bdme.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=7153 on the topic.  Thanks to Andy for doing this.  I think this helps spread awareness for The Ventures and The Shadows.

Thanks again, Andy.

This thread from SG101 includes some terrific Shadows tunes played by Ivan Pongracic of The Madeira and his dad in their Shadows band, The Troubadours. Ivan's dad started playing Shadows music in Croatia right after The Shadows started. The Troubadours have a very rich sound and various comments discuss how they get it. I hope you enjoy their music. It includes Apache, Sleepwalk and FBI, among others. As The Ventures also played many of these tunes, here's another take on the sound.

Ivan here explains how he gets the lush lead sound. "Just a Yamaha Magicstomp box programmed with Echoes from the Past patches by Charlie Hall in the UK. Direct into the AC-30 from there." Now that is something worth trying.

I lurk and post in both places as well.
We have a few cross posters from the Shads site too.
One of my personal faves is Phil McGarrick, an outstanding geetar player and videographer of Smania for the past few years.

When some Shadow fans (not all) say they don't like the Ventures after only listening to a small amount of their music, it does not seem fair to judge The Ventures. As we know the Ventures have been going for over 50 years and they have had different eras with different styles and sounds. I've burnt cd's for friends to see what they think of The Ventures, and I always put on a selection of all the different eras. I think if more Shadow fans listened to the Pops in Japan period they might show more of an interest as well as Mel Taylor's fantastic solo albums.  It would be different for someone like Duane Eddy who has had the same sound and style since 1957/58.

Both groups have evolved, which is the natural course of things.
Dunno how Duane has survived playing exactly the same way he always has.
He's a much better geetar player than his recordings show.
No reason he coon't have performed some toons like this in his live shows:

I was aware that Duane is a great fingerstyle guitarist and all round musician. I've got most of his recordings and there are a few exceptions such as Desert rat. There are also some fantastic steel guitar, organ and other solos on his recordings that help add some variety to them.

Here is an interesting DE forum with some rare pictures and annecdotes:

Thanks 4 postin.  I 2 thinkits a shame there are no recent commerically produced DVD of a Duane concert.
But, if he's satisfy with his career, so be it!
