In fact, once I became aware of all the live in japan stuff, I rarely lissen to any of the studio records unless we're learnin 2 play something.

As I've repeatedly stated, elsewhere on FOTV, we played many toons the V never played live with Nokie.  H

I agree with you Walt - usually the live versions were better than the recorded ones. I read somewhere that they played tunes like Green Grass and 10 seconds to heaven live during the 60's. They would have played not album and single tunes to promote them then they would never get played again. I wish I had live versions of my all my favorite tunes by them and not 1000's of versions of the  hits and other tunes they always play live. A great treat to already have live recordings of Summertime, San, Night train and Vibrations.

Joe Saraceno did not play an instrument but Dick Glasser played the guitar. Didn't he write Bluer than blue? Apparently there is an unreleased version of Kansas City from the same session musicians that played the infamous More and Wipe Out.

Malcolm.

What are some of your faves you wish you had live versions of?
According to the credits, Glasser was 1 of the 2 writers.
This is now Nokie plays summertime now:

Andy- Tom B. here.   I always was a 'little leery' of
TELSTAR, THE LONELY BULL & OTHERS.   Felt that
the LP had some cuts tht weren't Ventures.   In
fact, never felt that was Mel on LET THERE
BE DRUMS!   Any way to research it?

There is a drum feature on the Surfing album, (the song title is escaping me), the fills/solos are too similar to the drumming on 'Let There Be Drums' from the Telstar LP. Unless Mel isn't on Surfing I'd say he played on 'Let There Be Drums'.

Speekin uf the Surfin' LP.....
that gem of a recording is proof that surf music doesn't have to sound "samey" and all be played at brakeneck speed.  I've never thot of the V as a surf band, maself.

Vibramute- The song you're referring to
is titled CRUNCHER.   I'm gonna go back
to it & listen real good.

I thought the treatment drumming-wise on
LET THERE BE DRUMS (Ventures) was so
superior to Sandy Nelson's version regardless
of whether it was Mel or not.   Sandy stayed
on the tom toms way too much.

'Cruncher', that's the one!

It's funny, I always preferred the original version of 'Let There Be Drums'. I felt Sandy was a better soloist, Mel was a better band drummer.

On UF2 the rumor that Joe Saraceno or anyone else but Nokie played lead on Out Of Limits was recently debunked.  :)
