Jazzmaster Classic Sound
« on: January 16, 2013, 03:05:28 pm »
This video personifies "that sound" that only the Jazzmaster has.  You can clearly see the toggle switch position.  We can only speculate that the colour is Olympic White or Lake Placid blue.

Looks like he's using at least .11 maybe .12.  The Ventures cood have done this toon back then.  I woon't be sprised if they had and it's hiding in a vault (or some 1 basement).

I enjoyed watching that, Walt.  It reminds me of how much I wanted a Jazzmaster when I was 13 or so but could never hope to get one.

Based purely on the year, I would guess he is using at least a 12 and most likely flatwound.

Best regards,

Andy

How I envy his long supple fingers!

It always seemed harder with my short fat hairy little sausage fingers....:-)

Defnitely heavy strings, wound G 4 sure.
Plain G not available until early 60's.
Never noticed his fingers...they just "move".

I really like Neil LeVang's playing, plus his selection of material is awesome.  Our guys should have gotten him in as Lead Guitar when Nokie took a hike.

The Jazzmaster tone really is unique. It's always been a curiosity to me. I'm guessing it's a function of the 25.5" scale coupled with the bridge and tail piece and the over-wound single coils on a wide bobbin and yes, heavy flatwounds are the way to go. The characteristics of that tone get exaggerated when put through a reverb tank but it does sound great on this video and in particular on some of the early Ventures recordings. -Marty
