Title: MEL TAYLOR vs JOE BARILE!
Post by: tabalt11 on December 29, 2011, 09:41:52 am
This is a topic we had some fun with on the other Ventures forum- UNDERGROUND FIRE 2.  And to shed a little more light on the subject, at this year's
FAN JAM in October, during the hour long Q&A with Bob Spalding & Leon Taylor, yours truly brought up the topic from a different perspective.   Devout
fans know the particulars date-wise in the history of THE VENTURES.   "Leon, your Dad played with the band thru 1972, then took a seven year hiatus
to form his own band The Dynamics, & also work behind the scenes doing promoting, session work, etc.   The fellow that replaced Dad for six of those
years- Joe Barile in my opinion infused the band with some rather innovative playing, breathing new life into alot of the old standards.  We know you
came aboard in '98 with your own special brand of energy.  My question- do you know Joe & did you go back & listen to his playing during those years
when Dad was away from the group?  There's no denying his importance to the band at such a critical time."

Also later I pointed out to Leon that his Dad had been interviewed in Modern Drummer & was asked- "With your background skills, high school marching
band, big band influenced by Gene Krupa, when you're playing with The Ventures do you find yourself holding back since you're obviously more suited for jazz."   Mel's quote was priceless- "Well The Ventures are a guitar band- not a drum band."

It's my feeling & I made it clear to Leon that at times Joe Barile overplayed within the song so there were too many fills & he agreed.  There was also a
slight mention about timing regarding Joe & Bob Spalding added that he had played on several side sessions with Joe & felt his strengths were that his
percussion skills made him the perfect choice to back up The Ventures as he did countless times when Mel returned to the group on timbales, ****os,
kettle drums, etc.   For instance, he was prominently used on the New Testament LP.  Presently I've been playing the LIVE LPS from Joe's years in the
car & despite the obvious overplaying in spots- it's a joy harkening back to his time spent with the band.  In a sense, we can compare his entrance into
the scheme of things with Gerry McGee's in '68 when he took over for that 'somewhat famous' lead guitarist Nokie Edwards.  At that time, I think The
Ventures made a great career decision 'cause it came at the psychedelic-underground music phase.  To hear the standards given the Joe Barile treat-
ment provided me anyway with a newfound enthusiasm for my favorite band of all time.

I'd love to get some feedback here at FANS OF THE VENTURES on this 'never gets old' topic.  And thanks from your co-moderator THOMAS!

That's what we need more clips of.   My favorite LP's are the Japanese live offerings from the 70's.  Really a shame that
VHS tapes weren't released from those years.  Every once in a while a clip like this will pop up but most likely they were
taken by fans in the audience.   Thanks Rich!

It's a shame these guys don't have any audio OR video posted anywhere:  http://www.philanthonyband.com/index.html

How is one supposed to hire them if one has never heard them? :o

Dear Phil Anthony Band Guy (Reply 5): do you mean no clips of Barile and Taylor together? If not, surely you jest or are new to this band.  If you do mean Taylor Vs. Barile I couldn't agree more--Don't think I ever saw any video of Barile. I'll do a web search. Been getting lots'a surprises lately-- in addition to skunk Baxter I was surprised n happy last night to see Rick Derringer playing and singing Memphis with the group, and Peter Frampton playing as well.  The band was very supportive of them musicianshipwise (sorry) and all three looked as happy and thrilled as eight-year-olds on a Christmas morn ! Like I mean, REALLY, thrilled.

By the way add my name to people unhappy with the reorganized YouTube music section--it's hard to navigate and seems to have little or no ability to search. LTR GTR.

The YOUTUBE CLIPS you mention with Baxter, Derringer & Frampton are included on that 30TH ANN. SUPER SESSION
DVD.  & other than studio work, Joe Barile & Mel never appeared on stage together to my knowledge.   Joe did add extra
percussion- (timbales, congas, etc.) on NEW TESTAMENT & a few releases after the year 2000.   His unique style came into the
band at just the right time, breathing NEW LIFE into alot of the standards.   It certainly would've been a treat to have them both go
at it onstage in WIPE OUT & CARAVAN.

I recall reading in an old issue of New Gandy Dancer that Mel and Joe recorded an unreleased drum battle album together.

I no longer have that issue as I sold it on ebay which I very much regret! I should have taken some photo-copies!

This is a really good topic. I felt the hiring of Leon as Mel's replacement was the "PC" thing to do, however, Joe Barile would have been a much better choice. Joe is simply a better instrumental drummer; his playing and feel is more Mel Taylor-ish then Leon's. Leon is an adequate rock drummer, but he just doesn't have that 'feel' that guys like Mel, Hal Blaine or Howie Johnson had.

I think the group as a whole had some "issues" with Joe.  This topic was in Del's book as I recall?  Tom, help me out heer.

Walt- Sorry so long gettin' back to ya but
in late '78 or early '79, THE VENTURES
were forced to 'fire' Joe from the
group.

Customs caught him with marijuana at
some point towards the end of the summer
tour & takin' into account the group's popularity
in Japan, the decision was a NO BRAINER.   Mel was
hired back & we didn't get a 'released' LIVE tour 'til '80
LIVE.   I do have a bootleg '79 LIVE & in listening 'the boys'
were still tryin' to get 'the magic' back with Mel.

As far as I know he's still involved with The Phil Anthony band!

Joe denied any wrongdoing.  Said they were prescription drugs.  Oh well.
I got this info DIRECTLY from him, BTW.
Dunno if Del was able to interview him for the book, or not.
