A NO BRAINER!   The industry is doomed.

If you don't like what's available I have a suggestion. Write your own songs, and don't forget to figure out the chords, and bassline and then write the charts out too.

It's easy, especially if you have some time on your hands.

Sadly, I have to say music's best days have come and gone. Even new groups or artists that appeal to me are derivative, mining old territory. Hey, there's only so much you can do with 12 notes (microtones included).  :(

For many years, it has occurred to me that while technology, communication media, learning aids, and availability of and access to inspirational types of music past and present, from the whole world,  have reached a peak today, the art of popular song writing is nowhere near the high points and standards of the past century...

There are incredibly good and talented singers, musicians, gear, recording equipment, all offering a range of opportunities for great music...to a degree which couldn't be imagined a few years ago....and yet...it just isn't there..

New artists and bands etc  pop up and are proclaimed as the new Beatles or whoever, but they don't sustain, and their huge hits and performances from even a few years ago seem soon forgotten...will they create lasting classic music?

I don't know!  But I suspect that we have passed a musical/cultural peak in the 20th Century.

We were 4chewnate to have lived during music's peek.

Has all of the best songs been writtend?

Sad to say we are stuck in a "Time Warp" and can't get out. The same could be said for the music of the Big Band era including Jazz and The Blues back to Bach & Beethoven & Brahms.

All music is homoginized and a derivative of what came before it. You put it in a blender and change it accordingly. So be it the evolution of the instruments played. If it hadn't been for Rickenbacher inventing the pickup for the Hawiian lap top we might all be playing lap tops and ukelele's instead of electric guitars with synth sounds so we can imitate woodwinds, or orchestras of brass instruments.

Let's face it The Veneture's origianl "Walk Don't Run" is a derivative and inspired by Chet Atkin's version of the same song which was written & performed by Johnny Smith a Jazz guitarist.

I have to agree that we seem to be stuck. Once rock hit in '55, it was hear to stay. Swing, jazz, country, and so many other forms still exist but all the dominant stuff has some form of a rock beat. I do like a number of relatively recent acts such as Teenage Fanclub, Fleet Foxes, My Morning Jacket, Ben Folds and I think they have a good degree of originality. Tame Impala is great but very derivative of 60's psychedelia and that's probably why I like them. So many others are very derivative.

Let's not forget 'the perception' from our generation
that today's music (used loosely) can't hold a candle
to the past so people like myself don't even seek out
what's being offered up today.   I simply keep listening
to the 'harkening back' radio stations that still exist.

Guess the term 'blind & indifferent' applies in a lot of
cases!

Tom,

I've tried to keep up with the current music trends and have been getting all of the "NOW That's What I Call Music" CDs.  It's been an eye opener that as the series has progressed, the number of tracks off the CDs that I put on my ipod has steadily gone down over the years.  There are some current artists whose music I like, but much of the more recent stuff I can't even finish listening to.

Guess what I'm saying is- like me the
majority simply don't even put forth
the effort.  At least you're more open-
minded despite the results!

Happy Monday!!!

Its my opinion that we are indeed in a shallow time in popular music. But I cannot discount that at some point, there be will other 'fluorescent era's...its just a matter of time.

Will there be another group like The Ventures?.....never.

I watched Joe Walsh last night on cable on the Palladium channel of "Live from Darryl's Place."  Darryl of Hall & Oats.

There's an interim part of the show where the guest and host and band members sit around the dinner table. Joe Walsh made a great comment on todays music.

He said; "Beyonce just came out with a new song. She had 5 songwriters and 3 producers on the song which only had 8 words in it."

Joe is all for live music with its emotion and even mistakes.

Go Joe !

Nice hearing from you Rich.   Hope all is well
with 'you guys' down there in Florida.

That is a super show.   Would die to see THE
VENTURES appear.

Joe Walsh said some nice things 'bout our heroes
in the past & evidentally is filled with lots of 'astute'
observations!

These days with my eyesight not well, I test apps, you know?  Those programs you see on iPads and Android mobiles?  The latest one really became a real job.  The entire app is co-owned and sponsored by a popular act (been allot in the news lately).  Open the app, you see groups with very imaginative names with all the same instrumental track - Boom, Boom, Boom and lots of electronic base with guys/gals talking poetry in a monotone.  It's very hard on my ears, but I have to listen and fiddle with the controls to see if the app is working correctly.
I asked a relative of the younger generation about some of these 'artists'.  Sure, they know them and even know how to pronounce their strange names!  Do you like them or remember any of the actual music of their songs (I ask) - nope!  I'm afraid these groups will not be remembered for their music but for scandal and showmanship.
I think teenagers of today will grow up remembering and loving the music their parents and grandparents listened to, not some pop styles of today.

Old Flogger---Yep! That's exactly what I've been doing.
After playing guitar for 5 decades and now finding near nil new discoveries that I truly enjoy...
my dissatisfaction with the current music situation has obliged me to compose more of my own tunes,
which at the very least helps keep my interest up.
But anyway, even from my very beginning interest in music, it was creativity is that hooked me on guitar.
My goal has always been to place into the repertoire(even if only my own) some original compositions.
More tunes, more choice.

Hi Jeff. Where can one hear some of your stuff?

On the original point.
The music industry isn't about making music. It's about making money.
There are still a lot of good musicians out there. Unfortunately, I do believe
that when it comes to music, we identify most with what we grew up with.

I find that by spending some time on YouTube, there is so much great music from the past that has been posted, it is easy to find stuff that you may never have heard and really enjoy it!

There's a lot of guitar instrumental music from our favourite era (mid '50's - mid '60's) for instance, that I still haven't heard, even though I have been listening to and playing a lot of that stuff for years- I heard a few online recently- tunes that I had never heard, or heard once years ago and forgot!

There's still a lot of Ventures and Shadows tracks that I've never heard, but many, if not all, of them can be found and enjoyed on YouTube...

It's great- you can still live in the past and not even have to think about new music from the 21st century- or waste your precious time trying to find something enjoyable! :)

And also...try listening to some really early guitar music (much of this is acoustic guitar music however) from the 1920's, '30's, '40's as well as later eras with which we are familiar...

Thank you!

As an example, as a Brit who has lived in Australia for many years, I had not seen the Laurence Welk US TV Show from the 1950's...but from reading articles in magazines and on-line and browsing on YouTube, I've been able to discover, see and hear the superb playing of Neil LeVang and Buddy Merrill- fantastic stuff and all those lovely old Fenders!  Great playing and sounds- even before the Shadows and The Ventures...!

Hi Jeff. Where can one hear some of your stuff?

Hi Steve! Thanks so much for asking!

For right now, the best source to hear these tunes(some of my originals) is actually from the Ventures Fan Fest DVDs.
For example, at last year's show(2015) we Pickniks played several of them. Here are those titles:
"Nomad", "Breaking Point!", "Gear Jammin' ", "Red Headed Woodpecker", and "Second Wind".

Since then I've composed several more, and expect we will be showcasing them this year!
OK...here's a few of the new titles..."Switchback", "Mindsweeper", and..."Ventures In Space".  More to come? Maybe!
Also! Grant has a new original, last year we played his "Fiesta de San Marcos", this year we will feature his newest creation!
Grant just mentioned this to us last week; sorry...I don't yet know what the title is of that one!

Walt, I'm itchin' to get these recorded, and we have developed quite a backlog.
When John R. is feelin' a lot better, hopefully soon, we can get crackin'. (We record at his little studio)
