General Discussion / Re: Ventures vocals?
« on: July 28, 2016, 09:30:50 pm »
Thank you sir! :)

It's just that it occurred to me that most bands included instrumentals in their acts way back when (even the Beatles played - and wrote-some guitar instrumentals early in their performing career)

It was sort of the done thing- you had to be able to play a few instro things if only for warm ups or for dancing..so I wondered about the Ventures doing a few vocals- the Shadows always included vocals on stage (and on albums and sometimes singles) although they were primarily known as both Cliff Richard's backing band and as an instro group in their own right- like the Ventures..

Please excuse my ignorance, but...

When the Ventures started out touring etc did they ever feature any or many vocals as part of their live show?

I've only ever seen Don sing Runaway but that was a 1980's live tape...

Did they sing in their early days, or was it all instrumentals?

Thanks all!

Bass and Bass Players / Re: Nokie's Precision Bass
« on: May 09, 2016, 02:12:05 am »
I claim the record on behalf of a dear pal of mine, who was the bass player in my first band.

The flatwound strings on his old bass have not been changed since about 1967...!!

Thank you!

As an example, as a Brit who has lived in Australia for many years, I had not seen the Laurence Welk US TV Show from the 1950's...but from reading articles in magazines and on-line and browsing on YouTube, I've been able to discover, see and hear the superb playing of Neil LeVang and Buddy Merrill- fantastic stuff and all those lovely old Fenders!  Great playing and sounds- even before the Shadows and The Ventures...!

I find that by spending some time on YouTube, there is so much great music from the past that has been posted, it is easy to find stuff that you may never have heard and really enjoy it!

There's a lot of guitar instrumental music from our favourite era (mid '50's - mid '60's) for instance, that I still haven't heard, even though I have been listening to and playing a lot of that stuff for years- I heard a few online recently- tunes that I had never heard, or heard once years ago and forgot!

There's still a lot of Ventures and Shadows tracks that I've never heard, but many, if not all, of them can be found and enjoyed on YouTube...

It's great- you can still live in the past and not even have to think about new music from the 21st century- or waste your precious time trying to find something enjoyable! :)

And also...try listening to some really early guitar music (much of this is acoustic guitar music however) from the 1920's, '30's, '40's as well as later eras with which we are familiar...

Walt

all info here on Wiki- Mike Maxfield was the lead player on Cruel Sea(a.k.a Cruel Surf)- he usually used Guild guitars- I think the lead lines on the instrumentals may have been doubled with piano by George martin at Abbey Rd studios

There was a Dakotas EP with Cruel Sea, Magic Carpet, The Millionaire and another track I forget!- Sorry!

A lot of UK guitar instrumental bands used to cover Cruel Sea- I think the record MAY have been speeded up, as the tempo is very difficult to maintain playing it live!

Totally agree Walt!

Although getting the elusive sound you want at home and then getting that sound (or something close) at a live gig- which often involves a lot of compromises!- are two different things...!

I think that for the last 30 years or so,  the availability of reasonably priced gear has enabled players to afford quite easily to get good sounds if they take some time to learn how to use  what they've got- which may not be stuff like genuine USA Les Pauls, Strats etc with a vintage Fender, Vox or Marshall amp...etc

These days a good copy guitar and a modern amp with modelling and effects built in will do the job OK, and won't send you broke or to the divorce court! :)  Used stuff is fine too- I have a few pawnshop purchases that are really good to play and sound great.

Whatever gear you use, if you don't do the work and learn and practice, it will make no difference anyway!

Bass and Bass Players / Re: Nokie's Precision Bass
« on: June 17, 2013, 08:54:53 am »
In recent years I've read a few interviews etc where a number of past bands and players (through their management) seemed to have some sort of product use business deals going with instrument distributors, and the gear used was supplied, serviced and replaced or updated regularly.

Often players originally used their own stuff that they bought, but maybe there were endorsement deals later when they became successful.

This certainly happened with the Shadows from about 1961/2, so it wouldn't surprise me if the Ventures also had deals with Fender, and later Mosrite etc
