Chords & Tabs / Steel Guitar Rag
« on: May 21, 2018, 12:23:23 pm »
Thought I'd ask...anyone have tab for the Ventures version of Steel Guitar Rag?   If not I'll probably take a stab at it.
Steel Guitar Rag was originally recorded in 1936 by Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys....Featuring pedal steel.   The Ventures covered this in 1963 with no pedal steel (as many groups have done).    I've learned parts of different versions over the years but wanted to get this one down.

I'm pretty sure Nokie plays the lead in the 1963 version.   I'm posting 2 videos below...one of the 1963 recording I am referring to, and another of Nokie playing this 33 years later (where he really lets loose, and makes it look easy).  I really like the way Nokie can approximate the pedal steel sound at times.

General Discussion / Wrecking Crew
« on: February 04, 2013, 12:13:45 pm »
Hello everyone.....

Was Mel Taylor a part of the wrecking crew?  I thought I read that somewhere but don't remember where.    I've seen that photo of him on drums and Hal Blaine playing tambourine.      If yes...what songs (other than Monster Mash) did he play on.

thanks

Chords & Tabs / Blue Moon
« on: April 05, 2012, 06:42:03 am »
Looking for chords and tab for Blue Moon...in particular the lead piece that starts when they come back from the bridge about 1:00 in.    The tab I have found on line so far looks wrong and unplayable (for me anyway).    The only video I have found is at the link included here.....Blue Moon starts at 3:38 with the lead at 4:20.

Any help appreciated.
thanks

Chords & Tabs / Gringo tab
« on: March 16, 2012, 09:45:21 am »
OK....I took a stab at tabbing out Gringo...I've always liked this tune.   I think it's pretty close but I may not have the tab notated correctly just as I play it in a few places...like in the solos...but it's in the ballpark.    Anyway...would appreciate and corrections or perfections.

Chords & Tabs / Posting tab so that the format is not lost
« on: March 15, 2012, 03:00:03 pm »
Hi,
Is there a trick here to posting tab so that the text format stays aligned correctly....e.g. so it does not look like this:

-13b14-11------------------------------------------------------------------
----------13-11----11------------11-----------11-----11-----11-------------
----------------13---------11-13----13-11-----13b14--13b14-----13-11-------
----------------------13------------------13-------------------------13----
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

thanks

General Discussion / Gringo....who plays what?
« on: March 07, 2012, 02:15:48 pm »
Hi Everyone,
So, I’ve been trying to do some archeology on Gringo.  This is the tune written by Gene Moles on the Twist album….and supposedly recorded by Gene and Nokie?    I’ve been trying to figure out who plays on it and in particular who plays the solos.     I’ve just finished scribbling down the tab for this song and will post it here as soon as I can put it into postable format.

Anyway….this is what I’ve been able to dig up….Anyone have any further info or comments?
Thanks
Chuck

Taken from Walk Don’t Run…The Story of the Ventures
Jan 1960    Gene Moles moves to Tacoma and meets Nokie.   They started jamming and writing together.
They went to Seattle and recorded Night Run (Nokie lead, Gene rhythm, Nokie bass) and Scratch (Gene lead, Nokie bass) at Joe Boles’  studio. (Bill Graham on drums)    They called themselves the Marksman when the records were released.  Night Train got airplay on Dick Clark show.
After this success they wrote and recorded Gringo and Sunny River. (Gringo writing credit is given to Gene)

Gene recalls playing Gringo for a Ventures session…neither Don nor Bob remember  Gene being on any of their sessions.

Gene and family were living with Nokie and his wife for a few weeks when Gene moved to Ventura. While Nokie was out Gene gets a call from Josie to do some recording.  Sometime thereafter (not sure how long) they are recording at the Liberty  building with Tommy Allsup (guitar) and Muddy Berry (drums).    It seems to allude that Nokie was there as well.   They recorded Gringo and Sunny River.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So, from this do we conclude that Gene and Nokie recorded Gringo with Muddy Berry on drums?   Who played which guitar parts?

But, from Malcolm Campbell’s Shadows website:
http://www.malcolmcampbell.me.uk/
he has a book on the Ventures: Driving Guitar  (free download)

http://www.malcolmcampbell.me.uk/book6/download/book6-file04.pdf

It claims that Nokie  plays lead and Don plays rhythm….no source given.

« on: March 02, 2012, 06:16:04 am »
Hi,
I have tab that I've scribbled down on paper and want to convert it to nice looking, legible tab on the computer. Can anyone recommend any software that they use for doing this...... freeware/shareware would be great.
thanks
