That's a nice 3-color sunburst but are you sure it's a 1956 spec? A '56 would be a two-color burst. I think Don had a '58 or '59 Strat. '58 was the first year with the 3-color sunburst. -Marty

I did a cover version of the entire "Going to The Ventures Dance Party" album a few years ago. It's on youtube at

Thanks Walt. We'll have to call that mood lighting. Most of my other videos came much brighter. -Marty

I have the original solo tab'd in Bob's simple style at:

I have a more complicated version of it on you tube at:

I get the impression he's played before.  :o

That would be quite a trick!

Rather than record my version of a favorite Ventures song, I recorded a favorite Ventures album. It's in two parts on youtube. I didn't use any midi computer instruments or drum machines. I did use a fake voice effect for background vocals. Extensive details are at the youtube links below. -Marty

Excellent recording, Phil. I'd like to hear you in a band setting.

If your talking about hearing print through in the silent sections just before the track starts, then yes, it's on every lp. If you're talking about examples such as what I posted where it come through in the middle of a song, let me know next time you come across an example. I love investigating these anomalies.

Twisted is a great recording. I haven't noticed print through on any Ventures recordings except for that "Fuzzy and Wild" recording I posted on youtube. I imagine others exist but I just haven't come across any as obvious that one.

General Discussion / Re: New Poll--Are music's best days in the past?

I have to agree that we seem to be stuck. Once rock hit in '55, it was hear to stay. Swing, jazz, country, and so many other forms still exist but all the dominant stuff has some form of a rock beat. I do like a number of relatively recent acts such as Teenage Fanclub, Fleet Foxes, My Morning Jacket, Ben Folds and I think they have a good degree of originality. Tame Impala is great but very derivative of 60's psychedelia and that's probably why I like them. So many others are very derivative.

He may not have known but someone in the One Way organization did. I know that because they make note of it on their Batman CD. On the back it notes that they deliberately used the mono master as they could not find a good stereo master. Every other CD issue of The Ventures Batman (SFM, all Toshiba EMI  issues) use a terribly flawed stereo master. One Way also used the mono master for "Fabulous Ventures" and as well, other issues of that CD suffer from a poor stereo master though not nearly as bad as the Batman one.

The Guitars of The Ventures / Re: Walk Don't Run Jazzmaster

Hey Noel,

andy's new Jazzmaster would differ from the Jazzmaster that Don played for so many years in that that one was a '68 and had block inlays. It would be interesting to know what happened to the Jazzmasters The Ventures played in the early '60's. I really like this one that Andy had made.

I don't mind that aspect of LPs either - I usually don't notice. I do mind the distortion on the CD example, it means that SFM and One Way didn't use the best master tape.
