General Discussion / Re: The Ventures’ Unsung Guitarists
« on: July 12, 2013, 03:34:09 am »
Since my post above, a discussion has taken place at UF2.  To update this thread and since it is easier to research on this site - I hope it stays around forever!

Here is the current list, based on Arnold's compilation. I added the release dates of the early albums and also the lead guitarist, where known.

What is not on the list are The Intruder and Limbo Rock, which are  ascribed to Billy Strange elsewhere.  Never on a Sunday to me also sounds very non-regular Ventures. There was also a statement here that the entire "Dance Party" album, except for Night Drive and Venus, was Billy Strange. However, until we chase those leads down and new evidence crops up, the list seems to be as follows. Not a lot, as noted earlier.

Another Smash,1961 May:
    Trambone (Billy Strange)

What happened, Vincent?

Introduction / Age
« on: June 16, 2013, 03:33:52 am »
I am five years older than you, Bruce.

I hope you are able to sell your LP collection easily and at a good price.  I don't collect and only keep replacements for the first Ventures LP I saw as a teenager (the Walk Don't Run album) and the last one I bought (In Space) before my friends and I went on irretrievably to the Beatles, et al.  The In Space album came from Walt.

Good luck.

Guitars, Amps, Effects, etc. / Re: Our Mosrite.

The Mosrite neck I have a hard time adapting to after a Jazzmaster.  But it is very fast and of course needs thin strings.

« on: June 16, 2013, 02:49:57 am »
I should say "my friend's Mosrite," as the Mosrite belongs to my Japanese friend.  He first saw the Ventures as a complete band when they visited Japan in 1964 and was so taken by their energy and sound.  Consequently, he prefers the raw, aggresive sound of Mosrites.

He has two, a red one and a black one.  I've had the black one on loan for maybe 12 years.

Since our shows focus on the pre-Mosrite era, we haven't used the guitar on stage.  But we may some day, just to show how Ventures music progressed.

The anodized pickguard on Nokie's Precision Bass is clearer in this photo.

Haha.  I'll tell her, Walt.  Perhaps she can sign up here.  We have no female members, it seems.

That is quite a story, Bruce. What is not clear to me is whether you became a full-time professional musician and, if so, at what point.  Is your band with Sergio a fulltime endeavor?

Regards,

Andy

Vincent, Taipei?  You were just a stone's throw from me.  Didn't Bob and Nokie visit Taipei in 1962?

I was born and still live in Manila.

General Discussion / Sundays
« on: June 11, 2013, 02:04:42 am »
Yes, Bruce Welch's health has caused him to close Shadowmania.

I'm 64, turning 65 soon.  There is not a limitless supply Sundays.  You are right, Walt.

Keep well, all,

Andy

Bass and Bass Players / More sunburst.
« on: June 10, 2013, 08:35:27 am »
Here is a better view of our bassist Anna’s sunburst Precision.  The center of the volume knob is push button that switches the pickups from parallel  (as in a Jazz Bass, I think) or series.

(I hope Anna doesn’t see this photo, taken during rehearsal.  She borrowed her daugher’s prom queen tiara to keep her hair off her face.}

Drums and Drummers / Re: Holy Grail?
« on: June 10, 2013, 07:29:33 am »
I am curious what drums they used in the early days.  I am sure that was the basic set, with just a single mounted tom and one cymbal (we didn't distinguish between crash and ride in thiose days).  There is a discussion now on the Shadows forum on the correct cymbals for that old sound.

The Guitars of The Ventures / What a collection
« on: June 09, 2013, 11:38:36 pm »
Thanks for the informative posts, Vincent.  Strangely, there is not much information on Ventures gear, so this is all very useful.

I am not a collector, but our amateur band has tried to put together more or less "correct" gear for the early Ventures and Shadows instrumentals we play. Not surprisngly, I find we have a few similar guitars, including the Hank Marvin Fiesta Red Stratocaster.

It;s quite a coincidence, too, that Anna has a Fiesta Red PBass on which she has kept the pickup cover, as in your photo.  She uses that for Shadows stuff.  I'll try to post a photo.

Best regards,.

I wish I could, Walt, but I live so far away!  Perhaps, some day!

Best regards,

Andy
