Hi Jeff. Where can one hear some of your stuff?

Hi Steve! Thanks so much for asking!

For right now, the best source to hear these tunes(some of my originals) is actually from the Ventures Fan Fest DVDs.
For example, at last year's show(2015) we Pickniks played several of them. Here are those titles:
"Nomad", "Breaking Point!", "Gear Jammin' ", "Red Headed Woodpecker", and "Second Wind".

Since then I've composed several more, and expect we will be showcasing them this year!
OK...here's a few of the new titles..."Switchback", "Mindsweeper", and..."Ventures In Space".  More to come? Maybe!
Also! Grant has a new original, last year we played his "Fiesta de San Marcos", this year we will feature his newest creation!
Grant just mentioned this to us last week; sorry...I don't yet know what the title is of that one!

Rich,

I have 2 basses. but I don't practice with them very often because the guitar itself keeps me very busy.
So all I can say string-wise, is that I much prefer round-wounds on my guitars.
They are 9>42 (Same as Nokie)

Old Flogger---Yep! That's exactly what I've been doing.
After playing guitar for 5 decades and now finding near nil new discoveries that I truly enjoy...
my dissatisfaction with the current music situation has obliged me to compose more of my own tunes,
which at the very least helps keep my interest up.
But anyway, even from my very beginning interest in music, it was creativity is that hooked me on guitar.
My goal has always been to place into the repertoire(even if only my own) some original compositions.
More tunes, more choice.

Walt, thank you for presenting that thought, I've been thinking about this too.
I'll gather together some ideas; I believe there are projects that could be mutually beneficial.
I'll speak about this with my bandmates...more on this later...

Hi, Jeff...thanks for the kind words.
Yes, from what I've viewed thus far, it is what you say.
Nice playin by you on whatever you touched. If 1 of the V can't make a gig in the USA, you could easily be a fill-in 4 sure.

According to Del Halterman's book "Walk-Don't Run...The Story of The Ventures":

In 1959, a few months after Don and Bob met Nokie, he(Nokie) came into "The Blue Moon" with a guitar case.
When it was time for Don and Bob to take a break, they went to sat with Nokie, and Nokie opened
his guitar case and showed the guys a Sunburst Precision Bass with a gold anodized pickguard.
The bass looked almost new, but was actually a pre-owned bass that Nokie bought for $125.00 from a pawn shop.
Nokie was invited to sit in with Don and Bob that night, he did, playing bass and then switching to guitar.
(This was night that Bob played a bass for the very first time, and it was in front of a live audience!)

This is the same bass that Nokie played on American Bandstand in 1960, and on the albums, "Walk: Don't Run!",
"The Ventures", "Another Smash", and "The Colorful Ventures".
After recording "The Colorful Ventures" album, Nokie loaned his bass to Judd Hamilton(formerly the groups road Mgr.),
for a live band job.  Afterwards, Judd left the bass to overnight in his car.  Next morning, the bass was gone...
Even in 1961, it wasn't safe to leave your instrument visible in your car; somebody smashed a window and grabbed
Nokie's bass.  Judd couldn't afford to replace Nokie's bass, but Leo Fender presented Nokie with a brand-new
Precision bass and a brand-new Jazzmaster.

Bass and Bass Players / Re: Good bass players are tuff to find.
« on: December 31, 2015, 08:08:06 pm »
It may seem difficult to find a bassist now, but it was nearly mission impossible back in the early to mid sixties.
Back then everybody wanted to play lead guitar, but fortunately, by way of attrition, many guys switched to bass.
A very few though, like Grant continued to play lead, rhythm, or bass, and excel at each. A rare bird for sure!
We played from early 1964 through mid 1966 before we finally landed a bassist. Roger Stolar was the lead guitarist
for The Minutemen, but he traded away his guitar for a Kent bass and a Silvertone amp to join us "Quests".
That worked out to be a longtime solution.  Roger was a Ventures Fan and was with us until his passing in 1998.
(We all did play in other groups through years, as when Roger and I were together in "Party Lights, John and Grant
were members of other bands.)  But we 4 guys always got back together, our camaraderie was magnetic.
It is to be noted that in the early years of Bob Spalding's group "The Nomads", they had the same problem, no bassist...
Apparently, back then(early 60's), there was a nationwide shortage of bassists. In these times, that situation is resolved.
However, there forever remains the problem of finding the right player that fills the bill of requirements.
These searches are a tough assignment, we all hope for the best that you find the perfect player for your group,
and that this will be a player that sticks long term.

No way Walt!

My bandmates all say she's my best sounding Jazzmaster.
Her action is easy on the fingers, her vibrato is near perfection, and she stays in tune!
B-T-W, how did you know her name is Goldie?---Is she going out behind my back?
Oh, I better lock her in her case!
