Ventures Fan Fest / Re: Fanfest 2015 Sample Vids
« on: October 06, 2015, 12:23:02 am »
Julie and I returned back home from the 7th annual Ventures Fan Fest this evening. (Monday October 5, 2015)
I logged in to Fans Of The Ventures and was greatly surprised to see some samples already posted from last Saturday's show.
Wow! That's fast with the posting Walt! Super camera work!
Judging by the samples you've posted, I believe the 2015 DVD sets will be the very best of the entire series!

Everybody deserves accolades for their contribution to enable this event to continually be a success musically and fraternally!

Yes Tom, it would be difficult for you to move after spending a lifetime at your home; I can identify with that.
And besides the uprooted feeling, you'd probably never find another place to display "all" your Driver of The Year Awards.

Yes! Life gets shorter everyday! Ha! Can't worry about that!---And I really could splurge for a Hallmark.
With the assortment of stuff I've already accumulated, my folks would have the option to open a museum when I'm gone.

Walt, we hope you will be able to endure at least through Fan Fest Time in October.
After that, you are on your own.  So, please hang in there!

You are very welcome Andy.
Over 50 years of the electric guitar instrumental experience provides me decades of experimentation in the lab(on stage!)
Yes, it did take me a bit if time to collect and collate my thoughts on the subject of "the" tone, and jot them down,
although I consider it time well spent if the effort proves helpful to others to achieve their goals.
I hope you gleaned some helpful information from the article.

Yes, those Hallmark "Ventures" Models are beautiful!

Gary Essex bought a Pearl White one at the 2011 Fan Fest.  I had my eye on it, but he pulled the trigger
before I made a definite decision. However, later that day I was called upon to accompany Gary when he
stepped up to play lead on "Apache", and "Journey To The Stars".
Though I can't comment on the playability of the guitar, I can say that I felt the instrument sounded terrific!

Bob Shade still had another one there in Sunburst...OK, so I thought I might make that one mine...
Oops! Too Late! Beat to punch by Byron Tietjen!

I'll save up a few $$$, maybe next time!

Hi John!  We welcome you and The Driving Guitars here to Fans of The Ventures!

Please consider You/the band attending the 2015 Fan Fest, in Philadelphia, Pa., held October 3rd, 2015.
(Presented by Superhost Tom Baltaeff and excellently videographed by Walt Stagner)
You're sure to have a fabulous time, you'll be meeting many other musicians with like tastes!
From 2010 through 2013, the Fan Fest was graced with the attendance of Venture Bob Spalding and his wife.
Bob took the stage with everybody, playing guitar, bass and one occasion, even the drums!
In 2011 Bob brought along Leon Taylor and Ian Spalding, that was super memorable!
Our own group has attended each year from 2010, and we are attending and performing again this year!

I just listened to your enjoyable music at your website. Amazing! Ventures music in the deep south! Hurrah!

Hopefully, sometime in the not too distant future, inclusion will warm, and we can all find a time to get together
and make this idea a reality.

The prospects regarding this is something we all could discuss between the prospective Beach Boy Project
participants on the Friday evening before the Fan Fest.  It will be a time when all, or at least many us will be collectively together.

General Discussion / Re: Lunch with Jack Defranco Sr. and Jr.
« on: May 26, 2015, 07:54:16 pm »
Walt, the concert took place August 1, 2003 at The Beachland Ballroom in Cleveland, and was attended by 227 fans.
Jack DeFranco drove down from Michigan to attend and Byron Tietjen came over from his home in New York.
We have 2 VHS tapes of Nokie's concert(1 black and white by Bob Kenney and 1 color by Byron Tietjen) Thanks guys!
However, we do not have any means to duplicate the tapes. If you contact Byron, perhaps he can provide a copy?
I do have several pictures from this concert and also from a 2004 concert when we opened for The Surfaris.
Maybe I should get these pictures together, duplicate a few, and send them you to post on Fans of The Ventures?

The only Pickniks members you'd recognize from these concerts are Grant and me.
At that time, John Ramski was not our regular drummer. John joined on a permanent basis on September 5, 2004,
when our Pickniks original drummer left for health reasons. Our rhythm guitarist left on June 7, 2007 and Bob Kenney
then became a fulltime stage member. John had played drums with us several times, and Bob had been helping
with equipment and appearing on stage with us since 2002. So the only members you'd recognize are Grant and me.
But if you go back to 1964, you'd find The Quests, With John on drums, and Grant and me on guitars.
We didn't have a bass player until 1966.  There were very few bass players here back then!

General Discussion / Lunch with Jack Defranco Sr. and Jr.
« on: May 23, 2015, 12:27:59 pm »
Yesterday(Friday May 22, 2015), Julie and I enjoyed lunchtime with Jack Defranco and his dad, Jack Sr.
at Skyline Chili in Lyndhurst, Ohio.
Jack and I first met at the San Pedro Hilton Hotel just prior to The Ventures "Cruisin' to Baja" event in February 2003.
It turned out that Jack was raised in Richmond Heights, Ohio, which is only 5 miles as the crow flies from my own
hometown of Eastlake, Ohio.  In 2003 however, I was married to Julie and our home was, and still is, in Solon, Ohio.
This is less than 10 miles from Richmond Heights, and Jack when reading over the manifesto, seeing that 2 guys
on the cruise were from his former home area, he made it a point to meet up with Don Ressler of Eastlake and me.
That was an surprising discovery, to learn that Jack grew up in such close proximity to us here on the Northcoast
of Northeast Ohio. We got along very well right from the start and Jack provided me with an All Access badge!
Jack, Julie and I reminisced about that exciting time aboard the Ecstasy, and the cruise to Santa Catalina Island
and Ensenada, Mexico.  Night after night we were the recipients of concerts by The Ventures and Los Straitjackets.
We also enjoyed music from Zoe McCullough and the remarkable Elvis presentation by Tracy Moore, and who
could forget the Cruise Fan Jam that received eloquent praise onstage from Don Wilson.
Also, for the first time. many of us met Josie Wilson and other members of The Ventures family including Jill,
Staci and Tim.  Lucky, lucky me, while having breakfast at the Hilton, who happened to be sitting at the next
table?  It was Judy Edwards who was soon joined by Nokie! After that, we got together a few more times for
breakfast or lunch, and Nokie and Judy came to Cleveland in August and our group The Pickniks backed up
Nokie for his concert at The Beachland Ballroom!  Since then, Judy, Nokie, Julie and I have over the years,
enjoyed other times that we were able to spend together. That was a fabulous time on the cruise,
I won a Stratocaster guitar on my birthday, Ferbruary 4th, and 2 members of The Ventures celebrated birthdays;
Don Wilson and Bob Spalding, both on February 10th.
Jack speaks with high praise for the all Ventures, especially praising Don Wilson and Bob Bogle for their contributions
for the groups longtime success. For Jack, his association with the guys became his own tutorial for the process of
constructing musical arrangements.
Jack and his lovely wife Joy now live in Michigan, but Jack visits his dad here every 2 weeks.
Jack Sr. is 94, and looks great! When he asked me, "How old do I look?", I responded with,
"You don't look a day over 80." Then he had a hearty laugh!
Jack has his own instrumental group, Surfs Zup. You can check his group out at SurfZupBand

Excellent performance by this group on "He Never Came Back"!

Trivia:
This Ventures original was formerly titled "Monster Monkey" and later became the vocal "My True Love" by The Moonstones(Dolton #70)
"He Never Came Back", is the revamped arrangement and new title that became a track on The Ventures In Space album.

Ventures Fan Fest / Tatsuro Saito
« on: March 30, 2015, 12:03:51 am »
Tom, to jar you memory...

Tatsuro Saito was at Busch Gardens in 2012.  This brave soul came all the way alone from Japan to Tampa, Florida U.S.A. without being able to speak English!
Fortunately, I was able to help him a bit with my "pigeon" Japanese; I was even able to get him backstage to acquire all The Ventures autographs.
A very nice fellow.  I hope he is able to attend in October, it would be great to see him again, and please tell him I'll practice my Japanese!

Oh, and I still have his calling card!

I am tremendously enjoying the latest edition of the Ventures Fan Fest DVDs(From the event held October 4, 2014)
Walt Stagner deserves a BIG round of applause for his efforts to record these sights and sounds.
And the final result is that he has produced a noteworthy and outstanding collection of this series of live concerts.
