Guitars, Amps, Effects, etc. / Re: Ventures Guitars and Amps
« on: January 18, 2012, 09:42:34 am »
That was an ENJOYABLE read & afforded us several clips we would normally not have access to.   I'm also a member of THE SHADS FORUM & find it mind
boggling how a large majority of the members there grudgingly if ever send praise THE VENTURES way.   The joy for all of us is that neither band wished
to be a carbon copy of the other.   The word we're looking for is DIVERSE.   And to set the record straight in talks with the majority of Ventures fans, you'll
find MOST prefer the early years of the band.  Next in line are THE MOSRITE YEARS!   Interestingly tho despite the big bucks & added notoriety that came
their way, The Ventures weren't fond of the guitar & it's limited nature.   They tried ever so much to change several things design-wise but to no avail but
that's a whole different topic.

Another great forum devoted to amongst other things-  guitars, parts & accessories,
technique & styles, instrumental music in general but more importantly The Ventures

Drums and Drummers / Re: Mel Taylor Plays Caravan...1984

The man's left hand speed is amazing & the double bass drum climatic build up at the very end is simply incredible.

Drums and Drummers / Re: Buddy Rich, Gene Krupa, et al
« on: January 13, 2012, 09:38:56 am »
The second one is THE ONE I'm familiar with.  It was part of a threesome- Sammy Davis Jr. just prior to this footage TAP DANCED while both drummers
did a bit more than manage to keep up the same tempo.    Years ago I didn't act on the opportunity to purchase the few video clips compiled of their
great drum battles thru the years.  There are two CD's available of the studio pairings & I do have those.  It's no secret that Buddy Rich toned down
his playing just a bit when squared off with "the man solely responsible for the drum solo within a song."  Krupa was self-taught & to my knowledge
couldn't read music.  That's really why Rich had the edge.  Both had blazing hand speed.  Favorite cut ever heard with both blazin' away- JUMPING AT
THE WOODSIDE with none other than Oscar Peterson, Dizzy Gillespie, Ray Eldridge & Flip Phillips.  Gene was also a fan of the 'small kit' setup so you
weren't likely to catch him with the Louie Bellson double bass drum setup.  In fact very rarely did I see Buddy behind the larger kits!

Rich- Those postings go up FIRST on UF2 & it's understood that Nokie's on lead unless noted otherwise.
I had asked Francis to post them on our forum 'cause I think they'll stip up more interest & comments!

Hey gang this is a FOUR DAY event of grand proportion.   I went last year & hears the breakdown:
BEST to buy a YEARLY FUN PASS to Busch Gardens-that'll save you big dollars over the daily or even two day rates.

The Ventures will perform THREE shows daily & depending on the day, the times will either be 11:00, 1:00 & 3:30 PM or 11:30, 1:30 & 3:30.   The shows are approximately 45 minutes in length.   To coincide with this four day stopover, Fiona Taylor the group's business manager sets up on the final day (Sat.) a MEET & GREET for the fans at The Ventures motel which last year was the HYATT PARK PLACE right near the park.  Last year that ran from 7 PM to 10:30 PM.   Plenty of merchandise to be had along with an hour Q&A with band members.

Have noticed round trip vacation packages inc. rental car have gone down some since the holidays.   I'm still hedging as to whether to attend for a second year.   And remember there's plenty of time over the four days to take in enough of the park between all the shows.  If you've got the bucks this is a NO BRAINER!   Just located a four day PRICELINE VACATION PACKAGE (no rental car) for $413- simply roundtrip airfare & motel with shuttle to & from the park!   That price might even include breakfast every day.

I've been lucky enough to see the group perform here several years back & NO I didn't see the legendary blues player anywhere around but you never
know.   Be nice to have a photo of him standing next to Nokie.   Anyway, details presently have the band set to go onstage 8:00 PM.   Tickets again can
be purchased at the club box office or thru ticketmaster.  They are $30.   And YES, the group sets up autograph tables right after the show to accomodate
their fans & to chat away.   Any other details you feel might enhance this posting by all means add them.  Time is growing short!

Others on this forum who caught The Ventures at this venue can chime in with more details, possibly give an idea of the room capacity, quality of food &
drink, doors open, etc.   The info at the present has the band scheduled to go on 'round 7:30 PM.   Tickets can be obtained thru TICKETMASTER off their
site or thru The Birchmere's box office- all info readily comes up thru a google search.  Tickets are $35 but there is a $9 handling fee assessed.   It's my
hope I FINALLY catch the group performing at this spacious ballroom.  See you there!

Local MiniJams on Tap / Tom's 2 Cents!
« on: January 05, 2012, 02:16:03 pm »
I'd like to think THE DADDY of all jams happens every October when I host the EAST COAST FAN JAM but Walt & I tossed this
CATEGORY back & forth before it became reality today.   I know with many of our jammers the last few years, proximity to one
another allowed the opportunity to exchange licks & ideas before utilizing car pooling prior to the jam.   Why even Chris Monk
who hails from Ontario Canada had suggested to me several times he'd commute a fair distance if it meant honing his guitar
skills.  Right now the names Ken Arnold & Bob Leo also spring to mind as east coast residents who'd welcome an occasional
mini-jam during the year leading up to our ULTIMATE EVENT.  Mentioned to Rich Carozza today was that these gatherings be
half-day get-togethers with an in-advance agreed upon attendance #.   Those attending would be responsible for bringing a
food or beverage item along with their equipment of course.   This way everyone gets involved in their own LOCALES keeping
The Ventures music alive & vibrant to the public while practicing their skills at delivering on cue the same.

Upcoming/New Releases & Reviews / Re: Ventures Reissues on Sundazed
« on: January 04, 2012, 11:48:36 am »
Looking at their catalogue of artists, the constant price seems to be $18.98.
Really like the colored vinyl idea combined with the Dolton label.  And the
colors seems to change depending on the original album cover.  It's
no secret I lost most of these albums to water damage last year.
A similar posting to Walt's appears on UF2 & mentions Feb.

Also recent mail order edition of COLLECTOR'S CHOICE MUSIC lists a Ventures compilation titled ANTHOLOGY which oddly only lists 2000 LB BEE, Part 2.

Their chance at redemption would've be to release the double LP as a CD with
CORRECT cover art!   Now that would've been a great addition to any collection!
