Here is another YouTube video with some Ventures content. This was at a show we did in 2010, again focusing on popular music from 1959-1963. Guitar music plus vocals this time, with a sax, etc.,thrown in. If you can recognize all the songs, then we are probably the same age.
The musical company's aim is to play popular music as closely as possible to the versions that became hits during the era I mentioned above. The hope is to trigger memories for those who were very young then. Accordingly, it was felt important to perform the pieces in the original style and arrangement and, in the case of instrumental music, with the same "sound." The Ventures were an important component of that music in Manila. I cannot overstate that.
The amateur company that produced the show is called the "Madeleine Cookie Company," drawn from a scene in a book where the hero bites into a madeleine cookie, which he hadn't tasted in a long while, and is then immediately flooded with memories, not distinct ones but feelings long forgotten. Those from France, will recognize the book – "Remembrances of Things Past," by Marcel Proust.
The members of the company are almost all amateurs, including Anna, who opens the show, plays bass, and sings too. In her intro, she says "this is a brand-new … Fender Precision Bass," because when I was a teenager in the early 60s, I was in awe of the brand-new, sparkling Fenders on stage, all beyond my reach. The guitars were a major part of the attraction for me.
This is of course just a hobby for me (so please give some allowance for my "Walk Don't Run").
I hope you enjoy the video.
