Just wondering if all the confusion at the end of "Out Of Limits" happened as a result of the recording process or if our boys just screwed it up?  ???

Great tracks. Maybe someday someone will issue them without all the annoying Navy promos. One of the best "Caravans" they ever cut IMO.

Chords & Tabs / Re: Ten Seconds To Heaven
« on: September 06, 2013, 02:00:31 pm »
I found this. Hope it helps.                                                        Dm7          G9                    CM7          CM7/6
Take my hand,    I'm a stranger in paradise,

Dm7          G9           Fm               CM7             CM7/6
All lost in a wonderland,    a stranger in paradise.

            Dm7        G9                       CM7     CM7/6
If I stand starry-eyed,     that's a danger in paradise

     Am6         Dm7         Fm    G9         C
For mortals who stand beside   an angel like you.

Bridge:

           G#7            C#
I saw your face, and I ascended

            Bm6       C7          Fm
Out of the commonplace   into the rare.

              E7             A
Somewhere in space I hang suspended

         Dm7            G9        CM7
Until I know there's a chance you care.

          Edim        Dm7          G9                  CM7       CM7/6
Won't you answer the fervent prayer   of a stranger in paradise?

                  Dm7         G9                 CM7          CM7/6
Don't send me in dark despair    from all that I hunger for,

               D7       G9                      Em7          Edim
But open your angel arms    to this stranger in paradise

                 Dm7         Fm    G9          C
And tell him that he need be    a stranger no more.

Although the words and music are credited to Robert Wright and George Forrest, the song is based on a theme by Alexander Borodin in "Prince Igor."

On UF2 the rumor that Joe Saraceno or anyone else but Nokie played lead on Out Of Limits was recently debunked.  :)

Nice pic of Don with the bass. He never played it on record as far as I know.  ???

Just noticed "Trambone" on that list. I didn't realize the shenanigans started that early but it would certainly explain the liner notes to Another Smash where Don and Bob suddenly announced that they were "The Ventures" and thanked other musicians for contributing. I'd also say Billy Strange played "The Intruder" and "Limbo Rock" on GTTVDP considering he wrote both tunes.

What's GWG?  ??? Also, I always hated the Let's Go version of "Wipeout" myself.

General Discussion / Re: Who played lead on "Gandy Dancer"?
« on: June 05, 2013, 04:40:23 pm »
I may have to change my user name here.  :) Seriously, it's a drag finding out that tunes I thought were played by Bob, Don and Nokie are actually Billy Strange, Tommy Allsup, Glen Campbell, Tommy Tedesco or God knows who else. Whether they could actually play them better themselves is sort of irrelevant. I still love the records but I feel cheated.  :'(

The consensus on UF was that Bob probably used the Gibson but another factor was Joe Boles' manipulation of the recording which was quite extensive according to everyone involved that's still with us.

I don't see where this clears anything up. If two versions of GD were cut, one with Nokie and one with Billy Strange then which was the one eventually released on GTTVDP?  ???

General Discussion / Re: 1960 Walk Don't Run - key?

I think this probably happened when the engineer (Joe Boles on WDR) decided it sounded better sped up a bit (which also raises the pitch). Quite a few of the early songs are a bit (usually) sharp or a little flat. If you've ever seen the Electron Music books that came out in the 60s a lot of the songs are in the wrong key (and often unplayable as written) as a result of being transcribed from these recordings.  :(

General Discussion / Re: JUSTLY DESERVED STATUS...
« on: September 25, 2012, 02:02:07 pm »
Would have voted justly deserved if this poll were still open. There were really very few records released with little or no Ventures involvement and there was certainly never anything released that they couldn't duplicate or play better on stage. I agree that at various points they were "Bogle's Ventures", "Nokies Ventures", "Gerry's Ventures" etc. (Hey, even Don played lead on a few things) and though to me the quintessential Ventures are Bob, Don, Nokie, and Howie or Mel I can appreciate them in all their incarnations.
