The Guitars of The Ventures / Re: Nokie Edwards & Jazzmaster?
« on: December 27, 2015, 07:02:19 am »
JMs and Mos have a fat sound because of the higher mid ends and similar PU and bridge designs (string goes over round rollers) .  So this is possible.  The hands of the player matters, of course!  Nice playing and innovative use of plectrum slide on the E-string for the screaming effect!

The back cover pic on Let's Go shows Nokie with a Jazzmaster.  There are other pics (on the Japanese LPs, such as rare collections etc.)

The Guitars of The Ventures / Re: Hallmark Guitar?
« on: July 18, 2015, 11:05:20 pm »
Have had a tricolor (blue-silver-red) Hallmark Custom 60 for a while, but it's no Mosrite - not by a long shot in terms of sound.  IMHO, the Japanese copies come closer to the real thing.  The Custom 60's bite is too metallic, and equalization doesn't quite fix it.  All said, the wider necks help and shielding is great. The overall build quality is great for the price.  Had bought this from the Hallmark site and called Bob to have white PU rings on the black PU housing.  I often wondered how the Hallmark will sound with Mosrite PUs but never tried switching.

Tridex 2LP set from 80s.  My fav version - asked Nokie to play this when I first met him in person in 84 - it was unfortunately not part of the set list.

Ventures Fan Fest / Re: 2013 East Coast Fanfest
« on: October 17, 2013, 01:59:09 am »
I echo Bernie's sentiments - too many exciting things to describe in a few words.  IMHO,this was the most rocking fanfest ever.  There were several new tunes and arrangements, as well as new players.  Bob Spalding started off his acoustic set with Classical Gas - playing solo on his Nylon string thru an acoustic amp.  That was great and the folks who weren't there missed something very, very unique from Bob.  Our host Tom did the vocals on "He Never Came Back", along with appropriate body antics and also adlibbed as a comedian to fill in some time.   The playing by all was sounding more and more polished.  In most cases you couldn't make out the fact that the players in a group had never gotten together before and played the tunes they were belting off so smoothly.  Watch the DVDs and be there for Fanfest 2014 - which will probably be even better.  Fanfest is surely turning out to be an annual pilgrimage for Ventures aficionados that is well worth it !!!

General Discussion / Re: Overdubbing

Also - Happy Together, notable for a counter melody by Nokie on the overdubbed lead.
Andy: lets not perpetuate the UF2 discussions here, particularly the errors - Nokie played lead on Out of Limits.  I dont know where this BS about Saraceno playing lead on that track originated from.

El Greco - played in two octaves, good whammy use in bridge part - nothing like that in psychedelic venture. Savage is indeed simple but did Nokie play on that?  I'd imagine that Nokie would try to better the improvisation part that was done by Hank on the Shads recording.

I spoke to Nike about this album at length as its my favorite. Genesis may qualify as V's simplest lead but it Bob Bogle on lead, not Nokie.

Walt:
That was definitely Nokie on that album.  Yes - refelctions come close.
